About
The Pomona Belgian tapestry is one of the most popular of William Morris and Edward Burne-Jones tapestries, designed in 1885 showing Pomona, "the ancient apple queen", who personifies Autumn in this Pre-Raphaelite tapestry. We see the figure standing barefoot in a pink robe, with an intricate leaf effect on the bodice and sleeves. Her hair is tied back and in her right hand she holds a harvest of apples and an apple branch in her left. On the ground and in the background are acanthus, with sunflowers, reminiscent of the Mille Fleurs backgrounds common in Medieval tapestries. An ornate and detailed work that is typical of the dedication of the Morris & Co artists and weavers.

Symbolism & Storytelling: Pomona, the Ancient Apple Queen

At the center of this tapestry stands Pomona, barefoot and serene, dressed in a flowing pink robe adorned with an intricate leaf pattern on the sleeves and bodice. Her tied-back hair and gentle posture symbolize purity and harmony with nature.

In her right hand, she holds a bountiful harvest of apples—a symbol of abundance and nourishment. In her left, she carries an apple branch, representing growth and the cyclical nature of life. This artistic portrayal embodies the essence of Autumn, making the tapestry not just décor but a meaningful expression of seasonal mythology.

Exquisite Pre-Raphaelite & Medieval Design Elements

This tapestry is deeply inspired by Pre-Raphaelite principles—emphasizing nature, symbolic figures, and rich, thoughtful compositions.

Behind Pomona lies a mesmerizing Mille Fleurs background, a hallmark of medieval textile art. The scene includes:

  • Acanthus leaves softly spread across the foreground
  • Golden sunflowers adding warmth and contrast
  • Detailed botanical elements reminiscent of 15th-century European tapestries
