About
L 'Embarquement is a French woven jacquard wall tapestry. This represents a detail from the Bayeux Tapestry created in the 11th century. In this scene, William boards one of his vessels leaving France for England; leading up to the Battle of Hastings (1066) when Duke William of Normandy was victorious over King Harold of Saxony, England.
Queen Mathilde's original Bayeux tapestry is some 230 feet long, and describes how England was conquered by Normans. It is now exhibited in the Bayeux museum in Normandy.
