Le Gout II French Tapestry

Le Gout II, or The Taste is a French woven jacquard wall tapestry based on the series called The Lady And The Unicorn circa 1511. The lady is taking sweets from a dish held by a maidservant. Her eyes are on a parakeet on her upheld left hand. The lion and the unicorn are both standing on their hind legs reaching up to pennants that frame the lady on either side. The monkey is at her feet, eating one of the sweetmeats; an oak and holly bush complete the boundaries of the scene. The background is done in the millefleurs style. The original set of 6 tapestries personify the five senses, the sixth commonly considered to be a declaration of love. Commissioned by Jean Leviste and woven by Willem de Pannemaker; now on exhibit in the Cluny Museum in Paris.
